I often wonder what went through the heart and mind of Jesus while he spent time in the temple as a kid. He was just a boy, yet he was among clergy and religious leaders who were his children. He created them, he loved them, and he knew them. They may have been amazed at what Jesus knew and understood, but I imagine that none of that phased him. He chose not to assert his divinity while revealing God, matters of faith and the human heart to them at the same time.

He sat there and listened. He asked questions, had some interesting conversations, and he probably pricked a few consciences and tugged some heartstrings along the way. He was at home there and he belonged there. He was having the time of his life in his element, even though it was long before he was ready to go public.

I also wonder what was going through Mary’s mind whenever she tried to make sense of her role and influence in her son’s life. She was a mom, but she was also a spectator. She was responsible for his everything, but she also felt powerless at times. I doubt this was the only time Jesus wandered off to do his own thing. Yet, Jesus is God, so theoretically he could take care of himself, so why worry? Just thinking about that dynamic makes my head explode. I can’t begin to imagine how all of this played out in the hearts and minds of Mary and Joseph.

It wasn’t easy raising Jesus, and we get a glimpse of this in Simeon’s prophesy when he was presented in the temple. Jesus brought Mary unimaginable joy, yet gut-wrenching sorrow. Yet, Mary gave her all to nurture her son, just like all good moms out there do, no matter what unexpected twists and turns come their way.

Mary’s example brings encouragement to moms everywhere, especially when kids don’t always do what they’re expected to do. If you’re having a hard time, reach out to her and ask for her intercession and support. Who better to help us during those times than the Mother of God?
